Key differences

  • Cloud engineers own the cloud itself: compute, storage, networking, IAM, cost — on AWS, Azure, or GCP.
  • DevOps engineers own the path from code to production: CI/CD, deployment automation, infrastructure as code, configuration management.
  • SREs own how the system behaves in production: service-level objectives, error budgets, incident response, toil reduction.
  • The skills overlap heavily on Linux, cloud, automation, and observability; the split is platform (cloud) vs delivery (DevOps) vs reliability (SRE).
  • All three grew from the same operations root, and people move between them often.

If you like the cloud platform itself, be a cloud engineer. If you like automating how code ships, be a DevOps engineer. If you like keeping production reliable under load, be an SRE.
